Nineteen Eighty-Four (sometimes written 1984), by George Orwell, published in 1949, is a dystopian novel about the totalitarian regime of the Party, an oligarchical collectivist society where life in the Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance, public mind control, and the voiding of citizens' rights. In the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue), protagonist Winston Smith is a civil servant responsible for perpetuating the Party's propaganda by revising historical records to render the Party omniscient and always correct, yet his meager existence disillusions him into rebellion against Big Brother, which leads to his arrest, torture, and conversion. As literary political fiction, 1984 is a classic novel of the social science fiction sub-genre, thus, since its publication in 1949, the terms and concepts of Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Memory hole, et cetera, became contemporary vernacular, including the adjective Orwellian, denoting George Orwell's writings and totalitarianism as exposited in Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm (1945). History is often changed to reinterpret the past in a favorable light (i.e. Lies My Teacher Told Me, The People's History of America). Legislation like the Patriot Act allows the government to unlawfully monitor U.S. citizens (Big Brother). The government uses propaganda to build a culture of fear and intolerance (nightly news, threat levels, war on terror all serve the purpose of "10 minutes of hate" from 1984). The list goes on and on... Answered by John Galt - Sun Mar 2 14:10:41 2008 In the Novel 1984 despite Winstons Ultimate fate the courage which he displays is inspiring? Q. From the proletariat, the Marxist/socialist referent for the new industrial working class of the 19th century. Also, curiously, the only people the regime in Orwell's novel can't control or truly affect. They are actually less unhappy than the party members.
