Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction. From Wikipedia under the

You can search here for college's with lit majors in different parts of the country. They will be ranked. Q. I have a literature professor that picks apart poems and gets all kinds of hidden meanings out of them. Can there be that much meaning in one poem? I noticed art teachers do this, too. How do they know if that is what the artist meant? Maybe they were painting a picture because it looked good, maybe they weren't trying to make some in depth political statement. Asked by Jason - Sun Nov 11 21:17:01 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I very honestly think so. I've seen teachers do that. Being a writer, I look at my work and have others look at it, and they see more depth in it than I do! It's crazy!
