Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with the impact of imagined innovations in science or technology. It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction is largely based on writing rationally about alternative possibilities. The settings for science fiction are often contrary to known reality, but the majority of science fiction relies on a considerable degree of suspension of disbelief provided by potential scientific explanations to various fictional elements.

These may include:

  • A setting in the future, in alternative timelines, or in an historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archaeological record
  • A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens
  • Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature
  • Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of new and different political or social systems (e.g., a dystopia, or a situation where organized society has collapsed)

What is the difference between science fiction and fantasy?
Q. Give me detail. I am doing this for hw and I need the difference. Don't give definitions, I already have them. I need about a paragraph of the difference between a fantasy and a science fiction genre.

A. Obviously both science fiction and fantasy overlap in their meanings, because both fiction and fantasy deals with imagination. But to me where they differ is that science fiction shares moreso of arousing the imagination because of scientific theory possibilities, whereas fantasy arouses because of the magical, mystical or other illusionary fancies of the imagination.

What's a really good science fiction series?
Q. I've already read the Dune series, pretty much all of Asimov's books, Orson Scott Card, Arthur C. Clarke, and several other series. What is another really good science fiction series? And I would prefer books that are more realistic science fiction, not super-crazy stuff.

A. Robert Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land" and "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" are must reads. I also enjoyed his novel "Friday." These books are not a series per se, but later in his life Heinlein tried to unite all of his stories into a grand story arc-and failed in that respect. Philip K. Dick wrote some interesting stuff. I enjoyed "A Scanner Darkly" and "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?" Again these books are not connected at all except by the author. Debra Doyle and James D. MacDonald's "Mageworlds" series is good. Start with "The Gathering Flame" which sets the backdrop for the primary story arc in "The Price Of The Stars," "Starpilot's Grave," and "By Honor Betray'd." Louise Bujold McMaster's Vorkorsigan saga is… [cont.]

What is the best in-print anthology of science fiction/fantasy short stories, suitable for a college course?
Q. I am redesigning a speculative fiction course (science fiction, fantasy and horror) and would love suggestions on in-print anthologies I could use. I have several on hand, but I'd like to make sure I haven't missed one. It would also be helpful if it is printed in the U.S. Gardner Dozois' anthologies are excellent, but they only include current stories, not classics. I do need an anthology that includes a good representation of the three respective genres' "best" stories, such as the work of Asimov, Heinlein, LeGuin, Poe, Lovecraft, etc. Thanks everyone for the great input so far, but I'm still looking. :)

A. I really cannot remember which one I used. I could look in my library and if you write to me I could let you know. One thing - if should have the story 2017 or Thereabouts in it. That is an amazing story. As I recall the book I used had a silver cover. It may have been the Norton One - but since that ends with 1990, you may want something more updated. Still, try not to miss that story. It is incredible. Pax - C

Science fiction is a genre of fiction. It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically-established or scientifically-postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas".[1] Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and rationally about alternate possibilities[2] in settings that are contrary to known reality.

  • We hope it will not be long before we may have other works of Science-Fiction [like Richard Henry Horne’s ‘‘The Poor Artist’’], as we believe such books likely to fulfil a good purpose, and create an interest, where, unhappily, science alone might fail. [Thomas] Campbell says, that ‘‘Fiction in Poetry is not the reverse of truth, but her soft and enchanting resemblance.’’ Now this applies especially to Science-Fiction, in which the revealed truths of Science may be given, interwoven with a pleasing story which may itself be poetical and true—thus circulating a knowledge of the Poetry of Science, clothed in a garb of the Poetry of life.
