Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place in fictional worlds where magic is common. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction in that it does not provide a logical (or pseudo logical) explanation for the scientifically impossible events that occur, though there is a great deal of overlap between the two (both are subgenres of speculative fiction). In popular culture, the genre of fantasy is dominated by its medievalist form, especially since the worldwide success of The Lord of the Rings books by J. R. R. Tolkien. In its broadest sense however, fantasy comprises works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians, from ancient myths and legends to many recent works embraced by a wide audience today. Fantasy is a vibrant area of academic study in a number of disciplines (English, cultural studies, comparative literature, history, medieval studies). Work in this area ranges widely, from the structuralist theory of Tzvetan Todorov, which emphasizes the fantastic as a liminal space, to work on the connections (political, historical, literary) between medievalism and popular culture. GNU Free Documentation License What is a good fantasy book for people who traditionally don't like fantasy? Q. I really want to try to dive into fantasy, reading it that is. But, whenever I try to read it, I usually get bogged down by pages upon pages of, what I consider, frivolous description and overly complex explanations of the fantasy world. So, I want to know some good fantasy books that won't, you know, say too much and simply show more. And, to help you a bit, I would love books with LGBTQ characters, but that is in no way a requirement. Thanks! Asked by Saemy - Tue Jan 19 17:03:27 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Graceling by Kristin Cashore Its a fantasy novel but the fantasy world is very similar to our "human" world so not much description is required in that part. But its a very exciting novel that I believe is going to be made into a series. In the course of her dark and eventful tale, Cashore plays with the idea of awkwardness, how at a certain age gifts and talents are burdens, how they make it impossible to feel comfortable in the world. And in this she writes a fairly realistic portrait of teenage life into the baroque courts of her outlandish kingdoms In many respects Graceling is a study of mysterious angers: it offers a perfect parable of adolescence, as its characters struggle with turbulent emotions they must learn to control. A while ago I was on a business trip and in the room I was staying someone left a book in the drawer. With nothing to do at night, I decided to read it. I generally don't like fantasy or scifi novels, but this one completely engrossed me for the entire three nights I stayed. I actually found myself wanting the day to end so I could get back to the book. Anyway I've been trying to find this book, unfortunately I am unable to remember the title or author. What I remember of the story is it involved dragons, the land was broken into princedoms, and all came under the rule of a High Prince. Most of the story took place in a desert princedom. I believe this was the first in a series of books. I've been wanting to read this book again and… [cont.] Asked by Tom K. - Tue Jul 10 14:34:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The dragon lord -- When Rohan became the new prince of the Desert, ruler of the kingdom granted his family for as long as the long Sands spewed fire, he took the crown with two goals in mind. First and foremost, he sought to bring permanent peace to his world of divided princedoms, realms hovering always on the brink of war. And, in a land where dragon-slaying was a proof of manhood, Rohan was the sole champion of the dragons, fighting desperately to preserve the last remaining lords of the sky and with them a secret which might be the salvation of his people . . . . Q. We have leagues with the same friends every year. In the past, people have stopped looking early into the season because they are too "busy" to look every day. Is there a format, like fantasy football, where everyone sets their roster for one week? Asked by Mizzark - Wed Oct 15 10:07:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. you can set your league on a weekly basis where there is a deadline to set your starters on all the games of a certain week. Yahoo is offering that format. just click on the roster changes under league setting when you set up a league. you can choose daily and weekly where the deadline is set every Monday after that, your starters will be automatically locked for the whole week.
