I love reading books that have a lot of romance or some romance. I also enjoy horror, fantasy, science fiction, etc. books that, again, include romance. Q. THE RULES: I want DARK, gritty FANTASY. Slight horror in the plots are ok, but no actual horror novels. ACTION and characterization are must haves! Absolutely NO romance novels disguised as dark fantasy or a goal of graphic sex as the main plot, I've read enough of those. No romances either. (Romance novels are all I seem to be able to find on Amazon.com, which is why I'm asking you.) I want the real fantasy genre. Romance itself is fine for your suggestions only if its delegated to minor plot status. Gay/lesbian is ok too. however, I do enjoy character pairings/loyal team vs other team/ (partners in crime) type of thing very much. Doesn't matter for race, gender, aliens, whatever. All of Harlan Ellison's work is dark, though I'm not sure it has the fantasitcal element you want. William Gibson's "neuromancer" and its followers are good dark fantasies, the SF element is only part of the story, not the central element. Also on the SF end of the spectrum is "Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, but he's writen a lot that isn't what I'd call SF, and even Ender isn't what you describe. I think you'd like it.
