A. I can understand why you're having trouble! The message is simple, but it's written in very old-fashioned language, and if you have a translation that sticks closely to the original Latin, it's extra hard! Here's a shortened version that you might find easier to get through:

The funeral oration was spoken after the first year of the Peloponnesian war to commemorate those that had died in the war. Thucydides wrote the funeral oration of Pericles *during* the Peloponesian war, while he was recording the events of the war. Funeral orations were popular in ancient Athens and quite a few of those written down survive to this day.The funeral oration found in Thucydides isn't a word-for-word account of what Pericles said exactly, Thucydides edited the speech somehwhat; a common practice in ancient times [Thucydides also state in his introduction that the speeches he included are not… [cont.]

Q. how do you deliver an effective oration?
Asked by lourlandpaul - Sat Feb 11 10:00:08 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Ignore the first poster, this use of 'effective' means one that produces positive effects; 'affective' means producing or displaying emotions. Both are good. It depends, really, on the oration you're performing. It's too bad you didn't include more information about what you're working on, because this is such a broad topic. Is your oration already written, and you just need to know about performance, or is composition a factor, etc? Anyway, guess the best I can tell you from here is to try to find the rhythm of the piece. A good oration will have a beat to it that you can get an audience to follow. Speak clearly and from your diaphragm, not your throat. Keep your hands at your sides unless making gestures, and then, rehearse in… [cont.]

A. I'm assuming your referring to the Shakespearean version. Not entirely certain what you mean by 'stylistic device' - are you referring to Antony himself or Shakespeare's writing? Antony uses misdirection and some very nice sarcasm (even if he's the only one meant to know it). 'But Brutus is an honorable man'... it's the hug while you stab someone in the back.

Q. Let's have a contest where the candidates speak about their views til they drop. Who could make the most sense and keep it up and be the last one standing? Let's have an orating contest! lol

A. Obama would win. I think he knows what he is saying because he speaks from HIS mind. His thinking is most nuanced and developed and you have to pay attention to the entire speech, where as Clinton has polled the heck out of her one liners, though she obviously is a good speaker -- I think she would fall apart bringing in pre-polled "okay'd" ideas that shift back and forth and actually contradicts itself. McCain would fall pretty fast.

Do you agree that Senator John Edwards gave a very effective oration in today's debate?
Q. Frankly, I was surprised at the strength he presented in talking about corporate flight and lost American jobs. I believe he is sincere in wanting to close the loopholes enjoyed by the rich and by corporations. He also convinced me that he will fight to keep a middle class, while the gap between the rich and poor grows exceedingly fast. "Greed" seems to be his target, and I like that ! I guess I've been over-looking him, up to today!

A. I have to agree, I liked what he had to say a lot. I also really admired Joe Biden.. he is always so calm and cool and doesn't seem to be trying as hard.. and that is a good thing. But I must admit , I like them all. I could vote for and would be mighty happy with any one of those people for my new President. What I do hope is.. that whomever wins.. they take advantage of the fact that there are all these good minds available for vice president.. and do not choose someone else that the public does not know.
